Another silly version of the hoax has started circulating, once again! This is a quote of the WhatsApp version as received by one of our team members:

Please inform all contacts from your list not to open a video called the “Dance of the Hillary”. It is a virus that formats your mobile. Beware it is very dangerous. They announced it today on  BBC radio. Fwd this msg  to as many as you can!

Below is a screenshot of the original post as received on WhatsApp:

How should this message be treated?

This message is a newer version of similar trend of hoaxes that goes round the web. Another example is an older version that came with the subject the “Dance of the Pope”. They’re just false information meant to spam internet users on social media and messengers.

Back to the message, the claim in the text is nothing but just lies. There’s no known type of virus that can be embedded in videos with the ability of formatting a user’s phone (mobile data or media). The message also claims the report was announced on the BBC this day. This is just ridiculous. When we searched the BBC news archives, we found nothing to confirm the claim in the report as coming from the BBC radio. If this report was really announced on the BBC Radio, then the same would have been published on their official website.

The fact is: this message about “Dance of the Hillary” first made its appearance on the web during the last quarters of last year and has nothing to do with computer viruses. It seems to have sparked from issues related to the US election campaign last year, a revamp of “Dance of the Pope” as mentioned earlier in this post.

While it is unclear who started this junk, the truth is that: “It is nothing but just a hoax!” Forwarding such a message will help nobody but rather add to increasing the spam rate and hoaxes on social media and messengers. If you ever come to receive one of such messages, just discard them and never hit the forward button!
