We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.―Jan Koum, WhatsApp.

That’s interesting to read, isn’t it? WhatsApp comes with newly added features on its 8th birthday. As noted earlier in the quote above, WhatsApp has added new ways to share photo, GIF and video stories as status which will disappear after 24 hours. That is not all, long pressing on a contact’s name in the Status tab will allow you a quick option to mute their updates. What more, a user can also quickly access the camera by swiping right from the Chats tab. Further, an option was added earlier which allows users to turn on two-step verification. (Go to your WhatsApp Settings, select Account, navigate to Two-step verification and tap ENABLE. This will allow the app to require a passcode when registering your phone number with WhatsApp).

Follow along the photos below for more:

Swipe to STATUS and tap My status to capture a photo, record a video or select one already taken from your media gallery including GIFs to be used as your new status. Also under this section can be seen recent status updates by your contacts as well as those you have recently viewed their status.

UPDATE your WhatsApp here (opens the Google Playstore directly).

(Remember, only the audience you have set to see your status will see it. When a new privacy option is set, it does not affect previous posts and status). To change the target audience for your status, tap the three dots at the top right corner, select Status privacy and set the right audience.

Swipe right to navigate to Camera (icon on the extreme left tab) and capture a photo, record a video or select one already taken from your media gallery including GIFs to be sent to your contacts, broadcast list or group. When sending, you can tap the settings icon (gear icon) to edit the privacy for the current status to be updated (previous ones wont be affected as noted earlier).
